When a loved one passes, it can be overwhelming to know what steps to take. The first thing to do is to confirm the death with a healthcare professional, whether at home, a hospice, or a hospital. If the death occurs in a hospital or aged care facility, they will often handle the immediate next steps. However, if the death occurs at home, you should contact your family doctor or an emergency service for confirmation.
If the death is unexpected or under suspicious circumstances, it may be referred to the Coroner. This is known as a Coroner’s case, which typically occurs when the cause of death is unclear, or there are concerns that it may not be from natural causes. In this case, the body is usually taken to the Coroner’s office for further investigation, and an autopsy may be performed. The Coroner will then determine the cause of death, and once this is established, the body will be released for funeral arrangements.
Once the death is confirmed, and the cause is established, whether through the Coroner or not, you can begin making arrangements for the funeral. If your loved one is under the care of Gift of Grace Funerals, we are here to assist with all aspects of funeral planning, guiding you through the legal and practical steps. We can also assist with the paperwork and the necessary registration of death with the Registrar General.
If you need assistance in navigating a Coroner’s case, we can help provide clarity and guide you through the process, ensuring everything is taken care of with dignity and respect.

Pallbearers play an important role in a funeral service, symbolising the care, support, and respect of those closest to the deceased. Typically, six pallbearers are required to guide the coffin on a trolley during the service.
For burial services, pallbearers are also required to assist with the lifting and lowering of the coffin into the grave. As this involves physical strength and careful handling, those chosen for this role must be fit and physically able to safely lift and lower the coffin with dignity and precision.
Family members and friends who are invited to be pallbearers often feel deeply honoured to take on this role, as it is a final and meaningful way to honour, respect, and show love for their cherished person.
A cremation is a process in which a deceased person’s body is reduced to ashes through intense heat in a cremation chamber, typically in a Crematorium. This process involves the body being placed in a specially designed furnace, where the temperature reaches around 800 to 1,100 degrees Celsius. The cremation reduces the body to skeletal remains, which are then processed into fine, ash-like particles.
Cremation is an increasingly popular choice for families in Perth, as it offers a simpler, more affordable alternative to traditional burials, and provides flexibility in memorialisation. Families can choose to keep the ashes in a decorative urn, scatter them in a meaningful location, or incorporate them into memorial items like jewellery or keepsakes.
Cremation services in Perth are available at crematoriums in locations such as Fremantle, Pinnaroo, Karrakatta and Rockingham.
Before a cremation can take place, certain legal requirements must be met, including obtaining a cremation permit and registering the death with the Registrar General of Western Australia. Gift of Grace Funerals is happy to guide families through the process, ensuring all legal and administrative requirements are taken care of while providing meaningful, personalised services to honour your loved one.
An Unattended Cremation is a simple and respectful way to say goodbye when a formal service isn’t required. With no guests present, this option focuses solely on the essentials of arranging and completing the funeral process. Your loved one is cared for and respectfully cremated without a ceremony.
Our unattended cremation service includes all necessary arrangements, such as transportation, documentation, and the preparation of your loved one for cremation. This service is ideal for those who prefer a more private farewell or for families who want to focus their energy on personal remembrance.
An unattended cremation is a more affordable solution without compromising the dignity and respect we always provide.
Please contact us to learn more or to discuss how an unattended funeral may suit your family’s needs.
A traditional burial is a process where a deceased person’s body is interred in the ground in a Cemetery. This type of burial typically involves several key steps, including the preparation of the body, a funeral service, and the placement of the body in a coffin or casket, which is then lowered into a grave.
Here’s a general overview of what a traditional burial entails:
- Preparation of the body: The deceased person’s body is usually washed and dressed or embalmed and prepared for viewing, depending on the family’s wishes. This ensures the body is preserved and presented respectfully for the service.
- Funeral Service: A traditional burial often includes a funeral service, which can be held in a Cemetery Chapel, Church, or at the graveside. During the service, family, friends, and loved ones gather to say their final goodbyes, share memories, and pay tribute to the deceased. A Funeral Celebrant, Clergy, or other officiant typically leads the ceremony.
- Cemetery and Grave: The deceased is buried in a Cemetery such as Fremantle, Karrakatta, Rockingham, Guildford, Midland or Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park. The grave is typically prepared in advance, with a headstone or grave marker placed after the burial.
- Coffin or Casket: The deceased is placed in a coffin or casket, which is typically made of wood, metal or eco-friendly materials. The coffin is lowered into the grave by pallbearers supplied by the family, and the grave is then filled with soil by the Cemetery Grave Staff.
- Memorialisation: After the burial, a headstone or grave marker is often installed at the site to commemorate the deceased. The headstone may include personal details, messages, and symbols that reflect the life of the individual.
Traditional burials offer families the opportunity for a formal and meaningful farewell, with a permanent resting place where family and friends can visit and remember their loved one.
In Western Australia, burial services are subject to specific regulations and at Gift of Grace Funerals we can guide families through the entire process, ensuring that the service meets their wishes and adheres to all legal requirements.
Australians are becoming increasingly aware of the need to reduce our environmental footprint, not just in how we live, but also in how we die.
While contemplating death can be a challenging task, it’s a great time to consider eco-friendly funerals. Natural funerals allow us to say goodbye in a meaningful way, while also being kind to the environment.
Natural Funerals: The Eco-Friendly Options
For those looking for a more sustainable farewell, what green funeral options are available in Perth?
While there are alternative approaches to green burials across the world, they are not currently available in WA due to legal and health regulations. However, natural burials at Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park and Fremantle Cemetery offer the best option for a sustainable funeral in Perth. These natural burials allow for a dignified service while having a lighter environmental impact.
Unlike traditional burials, which often use chemicals like formaldehyde, or cremation that releases harmful CO2 emissions, a natural funeral is a more eco-conscious choice. With the growing availability of eco coffins and biodegradable adornments, natural funerals in Perth are becoming more popular and affordable.
What to Consider When Planning a Natural Funeral
While Western Australian law requires a coffin for burial, our eco-conscious options still offer a wide range of meaningful choices beyond traditional caskets or unattended funerals. At Gift of Grace Funerals, we proudly offer Western Australia’s largest range of eco-friendly coffin options, including exclusive designs available only through our funeral home. These options allow families to embrace a more sustainable and thoughtful approach to their loved one’s farewell.
Eco Coffins: Our eco coffins are crafted from untreated, natural materials such as recycled cardboard, wicker, and wool. These environmentally responsible choices are ideal for natural and eco-friendly funerals, gently breaking down over time and returning to the earth in a respectful and dignified way.
Flower Selection: A natural funeral doesn’t mean sacrificing beauty or dignity. Locally sourced native flowers can adorn the coffin, offering a personal touch without harming local ecosystems.
Biodegradable Clothing: The body can be dressed in natural fibres such as hemp, organic muslin, or biodegradable cotton. Alternatively, a shroud made from these sustainable materials is a respectful option.
No Preservative Chemicals: We avoid embalming fluids and other preservatives that inhibit natural decomposition. This allows the body to break down naturally.

A memorial service offers a more informal and personalised alternative to a traditional funeral. It is typically held in a location that held special meaning to your loved one, allowing the service to focus on celebrating their life in a reflective and individualised manner.
The key difference between a memorial service and a traditional funeral is the absence of your loved one in their coffin. This can be a more comforting choice for some families. Instead, an urn containing your loved one’s ashes may be present, if you wish.
A memorial service can be held at most locations or venues, offering a unique alternative to a conventional funeral. We specialise in creating bespoke Memorial Services and have supported many families in saying goodbye in their own way. From beaches, parks, family homes, to favourite places or even a local bowling club, we help make these final moments as meaningful and personal as possible.

Your best friend should be at your funeral too. We understand that pets are not just animals – they are cherished members of the family. That’s why at Gift of Grace Funerals, we offer pet-friendly funeral services, allowing every member of the family to say their goodbyes.
Pets share deep bonds with their owners, and their presence in the grieving process is often just as important. Research shows that pets can mourn the loss of a loved one and may display signs of sadness. Including a beloved pet in the funeral service can help bring comfort to both your family and your pet.
We can accommodate pets at funeral services, whether it’s in a formal setting or a more relaxed, personalised service. From bringing them along to the service to including them in a farewell tribute, we can help make sure your pet can be part of this important time.
Please note, there are certain rules that must be abided by in a Cemetery Chapel setting when including pets, so we encourage you to discuss your wishes with your Funeral Specialist to ensure everything is arranged smoothly and in line with the venue’s requirements.
If you’d like to learn more about how to include your loved one’s pet in a funeral service, please contact us. We’re here to help create a compassionate and meaningful farewell for everyone, including your furry family members.
One of the most common questions we receive is, “When will we receive the Death Certificate?”
Registering a death with the Registrar General of Western Australia is a necessary legal step following the passing of a loved one. At Gift of Grace Funerals, we take care of this process on your behalf, ensuring all required paperwork is completed accurately and lodged promptly, with your approval.
The Death Certificate is lodged on the day of the funeral and typically arrives at our office within approximately 10 business days.
Once the original Death Certificate is received, we will notify the Funeral Administrator. You may then arrange to collect it from our O’Connor office or have it mailed to you, whichever is most convenient.
The original Death Certificate is an important document required for legal and administrative matters such as closing bank accounts, notifying Medicare, and contacting other service providers.
